About
How it all Began
Scott Turkington was born in the quaint fishing town of Homer Alaska. Growing up, Scott had no idea that the sense of adventure bestowed upon him by living in the “Last Frontier” would take him on so many amazing adventures later in life! Whether it was hiking to one of the many glaciers situated on Kachemak bay, watching the annual migration of Sandhill Crane to his family’s 40 acre homestead every year or mountain biking a rugged trail carved out of the side of a mountain, there never seemed to be a limit on the experiences one could have in the Last Frontier.
Through his early years Scott always had a love for the arts. He grew up sketching, painting, sculpting and creating art when ever he could. He always knew that someday his art would play a major role in his life. After graduating with a degree in Multimedia and Web Design, Scott worked as a graphic designer for several years until finally being asked to work for an alternative fuel company founded by his cousin Charles Anderson.
Golden Fuel Systems, the company founded by Charles, converts diesel engines to run on used cooking oil from restaurants. Often times their job requires that Scott and Charles travel to exotic locations. Because of Scott’s background in Multimedia and Web Design he always has a camera on hand to capture and document anything exciting that happens on their adventures. It didn’t take long to began acquiring a wealth of footage not only of the incredible places they travel but also the different technologies in the sustainable living industry. Because of their desire to share their adventures and technologies they uncovered, it was time to take their footage and share it with the world, thus What in the World? was born.
Working as the Art Director for Golden Fuel Systems and producing What in the World? Scott keeps pretty busy. Scott also founded Sandhill Studios so he could help other businesses and individuals tell their stories. Whether working as a videographer, graphic designer or web designer, Scott looks forward to telling your story in what ever medium you require.
Growing up in Alaska
Growing up in Alaska, I was able to witness one of nature’s great spectacles. Every year, thousands of Sandhill Crane migrate to Alaska for the summer mating and breeding season. For me, hearing their calls each year as they made their annual return to my families 40 acre homestead signaled the beginning of summer. Flying thousands of miles each year to the Last Frontier to rear their young isn’t the only amazing thing about these majestic birds, they also mate for life.
From my work with one of the largest Straight Vegetable Oil conversion companies in the world, to documenting low temperature geothermal power generation, my job as a Media Designer and Videographer has allowed me to work on some amazing projects. My love for videography has also lead me into filming weddings. Filming weddings is probably one of the most rewarding projects I’ve had the privilege to work on. Being able to tell the story of one of the happiest days of a newly married couples lives is a true joy. When I decided to found Sandhill Studios I was trying to think of a name for my business that embodied my love for Alaska and the Sandhill Crane did just that. What would be more fitting than to name my business after the bird that inspired me as a child, and like the married couples who’s weddings I film, commit to their partner for life.
“The key to any project whether it’s in print, web, video etc. etc., is to tell the story of the person you are creating the project for. I think the reason I love my job so much, is that with every new project I work on, I get to tell your story through what ever medium I am working in. I believe it is my ability to tell a story that helps me take what could be an ordinary project and turn it into something extraordinary.” ~ Scott Turkington
